Passion a Key to Effective Performance

Weither you are a 9 year old assigned a language arts packet by a teacher or a consulting professional assigned to write a blog - passion is the key to good peformance. This is the lesson, although I have know professionally for years, I was reminded of when I sat next to a 4th grade student in an airplane on the way to a client presentation.
So what does passion do? Passion ignites endless energy for someone to tackle a challenging task. Provides confidence and conviction to a person to get things done. Inspires and infects all those around us to strive for excellence. It provides clarity to see a vision, the ability to discover the tools and resources needed, and direction to bring the vision to fruition. It provides drive for results.
So what can HR help to ignite passion within its employees? Deliberate Success: Realize Your Vision with Purpose, Passion and Performance written by Eric Allenbaugh and Denis Waitley describes 4 key areas Human Resources and Hiring Manager should try to uncover providing them insight into an employees passion and ongoing career interest:
Motivators: What makes work meaningful to you?
- What turns you on about work?
- What turns you off about work?
Dreams: If you had no limits, what would you be or do?
Values: What would cause you…
- Join a particular company?
- Leave a particular company?
Accountability: How might we redesign your job to better achieve your interests and the company interests?
- What makes work meaningful to you?
Now, I am sure the 4th grade Language Arts teacher is not going to ask theses questions to her student who is procrastinating in completing her language arts packet. However, HR Managers and Hiring Managers might give it some consideration when faced with an underperformer or an employee who lacks passion for results.
